Biography
Brenna Hansen is a photographic visual artist and educator from Southern California, currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their work explores perception, misinformation, and how society organizes information. Using both digital and analog processes, Hansen delves into the epistemological significance of photography to represent propagandized narratives and examine the gap between perception and reality. Hansen studied Studio Art, Art Photography, and holds an interdisciplinary degree in Art History & Philosophy. Their work has been exhibited internationally in the US, Colombia, Chile, and Spain. They have also contributed to the establishment of community darkrooms, including the Eugene Darkroom Group and the East Bay Photo Collective. Hansen now serves as the Darkroom Manager at East Bay Photo Collective.

Statement
Brenna Hansen is a photographic visual artist and arts educator from Southern California, currently living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, CA. Their work focuses on perception, misinformation, and the way contemporary society organizes information and experience. They use a combination of digital and analog photography processes to explore the epistemological significance of the medium, to visually and experientially represent the propagandized narratives researched in their work, and to examine the spaces between perception and reality.
Hansen studied Studio Art at Orange Coast Community College, Art Photography at California State University Long Beach, and holds an Interdisciplinary Bachelor in Art History & Philosophy from Arizona State University. Their work has been exhibited internationally in the United States, Colombia, Chile, and Spain.
In 2019, they worked to establish the Eugene Darkroom Group community darkroom in Eugene, OR, serving as their Education Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator until 2023. They currently work as an educator in darkroom & alternative photography processes, book-making, professional practices for emerging artists, and more, both internationally and within the US as an instructor at East Bay Photo Collective and other institutions. In 2023, they helped open the East Bay Photo Collective Community Darkroom in Oakland, CA and currently serves as their Darkroom Manager.
