Arnold Fokam
Cameroun
Arnold Fokam is a young visual artist whose work centers on water in relation to the body and embraces a multidisciplinary practice that explores painting, photography, and performance. A graduate in visual arts and art history from the Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Douala in Nkongsamba, he underwent training that led him primarily toward painting on canvas before later experimenting with other media. An artist of dreams and utopia, his work possesses a spiritual, cultural, and ecological dimension. He is interested in the concept of symbiosis and fosters an intimate dialogue between humanity and the aquatic world. He blends reality with the fantastical and draws attention to the critical state of the Anthropocene, emphasizing the need for humans to care for water, the source of all life on Earth. Arnold Fokam is the recipient of the 2020 Goethe Discovery Award / Visual Arts, the Ateliers SAHM Discovery Award, and the Barthélémy TOGO Prize in 2023. His works are part of several private and public collections, such as those of the Goethe-Institut and the Doual’art Contemporary Art Center.
