Atsushi Momoi

Japan

Biography

Atsushi Momoi is based in Tokyo, Japan. He studied sociology at Kwansei Gakuin University before moving to London, where he studied photography at the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication).
His photographic practice explores the relationship between the inner and outer selves—seeking to visualize the shifting connection between his subjective experience, shaped by layers of memory, and the external world as it is perceived. By examining how material reality intertwines with personal memory, Momoi reveals the multiple layers of the world that emerge through this process, and in doing so, pursues new values that invite viewers to reconsider their own ways of seeing.

Project

“Echo, Frame, Flux” by Atsushi Momoi is a conceptual photography series that reflects on the dynamic interplay between order and change in a constantly shifting world. Prompted by the birth and growth of his own child, Momoi uses everyday imagery to explore how nature, personal experience and human-made systems interact, revealing both the patterns we try to impose and the unpredictable deviations that resist rational boundaries.

Drawing on philosophical ideas about flux and becoming, the work positions photography as a space between external reality and the artist’s inner life, suggesting an ambiguous connection between the visible world and the unseen structures that shape it. Through sequences of simple, everyday moments, ""Echo, Frame, Flux"" invites viewers to consider how order and fluidity coexist in life and perception, and how images can visualise the entanglement of experience, memory and environment.
