Deb Choudhuri

India

Biography

Debmalya Ray Choudhuri (b. 1991, Kolkata) (he/they) is a self-taught photographer from India based in New York. Rooted in a diaristic practice, their work spans photography, performance, and text, centering trauma and resilience while engaging broader questions of gender, identity, and memory. What began as an escape from chaos evolved into a search for intimacy—connecting deeply, both physically and emotionally, with people and spaces to create images that feel raw, tender, and honest. This personal transformation forms the foundation of the artist's ongoing inquiry into the human condition, connecting personal experience to broader social concerns. In a climate of right-wing populism and selective empathy—both in their homeland, India, and their current residence in the United States—their work seeks to explore community and kinship. Through an emphasis on care, collaboration, and vulnerability, he examines how people express grief, desire, and longing, framing interpersonal relationships as spaces of resistance and solidarity.
Deb has exhibited internationally, including at Les Rencontres d’Arles, the Griffin Museum of Photography, Rotterdam Photo Festival, Sarajevo Photo Festival, Photo Museum Ireland, and has been published in FT Weekend, Granta, British Journal of Photography, Trigger by FOMU Antwerp, among others.

Project

“The Weight of the Earth” by Deb Choudhuri is a deeply autobiographical long-term photographic project that traces themes of fragility, loss, desire and identity through a layered visual diary constructed over several years. Inspired by personal traumas — including the suicide of a lover and the artist’s own confrontation with serious illness — the series expands into a broader reflection on queer identity, belonging and collective experience within the socio-politically fragmented landscape of the United States.

Blending self-portraits with images of friends, strangers and moments of encounter, the work grapples with taboo subjects such as mental health, trauma and desire, using photography and performance as tools for emotional expression, healing and community-building. By weaving together narratives of grief and resilience, Choudhuri creates a tapestry that explores how individuals navigate yearning, identity and self-affirmation in a complex world marked by displacement and hope.
