Project
“Carnival Celebrations at Retirement Homes” by János Bodey is a documentary photography project that observes festive life and moments of joy within a context often overlooked by mainstream visual culture. The series focuses on carnival celebrations taking place in retirement homes, capturing how elderly communities engage with ritual, costume and collective play in ways that reaffirm social bonds and individual expression. The images highlight the vibrant humanity, humour and dignity of participants as they transform everyday spaces into sites of colour, movement and shared tradition. Through direct, empathetic observation, Bodey’s work invites viewers to reconsider assumptions about ageing and community celebration, emphasising how rituals like carnival bring vitality and connection to people at every stage of life.
