Jean-Louis N’cho
Ivory Coast
Biography
Jean-Louis N’cho is a visual artist from Côte d’Ivoire, currently based in France. He began photography as a way to express his emotions and achieve personal fulfillment. Today, his work highlights African cultures and traditions, seeking to create a dialogue between ancestral heritage and contemporary life.
Initially drawn to mobile photography for its accessibility, he transformed this limitation into a true creative strength. Convinced that while technology comes at a cost, creativity is free and essential to art, he has made this belief the driving force of his practice—prioritizing imagination and vision over technique or equipment.
Despite limited resources, his talent has emerged and gained recognition: he received the Prazzle Galaxy Grant in February 2024, exhibited at the African Foto Fair in Côte d’Ivoire (November–December 2023) under the direction of artist Aïda Muluneh, and several of his works were selected as “Photos of the Day” on PhotoVogue.com (January–February 2024).
His images have also been featured by major platforms dedicated to promoting African art, including Okay Africa, Afrodysée, Osengwa, Afriquette, and The Bright Continent, further strengthening his visibility and impact within the contemporary art scene.
Project
“Les Abidjanais” by Jean-Louis N’cho is a photographic series the Ivorian artist began in 2023 upon his return to Côte d’Ivoire after several years abroad. The work presents a poetic and contemporary examination of life in Abidjan, blending everyday street scenes with elements of ancestral symbolism and cultural memory. N’cho uses imagery that reimagines the role of traditional masks, weaving them into gestures and contexts that bridge heritage and modern lived experience.
Rooted in questions of identity, belonging and continuity, Les Abidjanais celebrates the vitality and diversity of Abidjan’s people, affirming how historical memory and contemporary expression coexist in urban African life. The project’s distinct visual language has gained international attention through exhibitions and online platforms, highlighting N’cho’s belief that creativity transcends technical means.
