Project

Handful of Earth is an ongoing visual exploration of the human connection to the places we inhabit and of daily life in mountain regions. The project grew out of Andrei Becheru’s long-standing fascination with the mysterious atmosphere of mountain landscapes — a fascination rooted in childhood and rekindled in 2014 through his work with a local NGO and a personal urge to explore.

For two years, he gathered images during mountain hikes, allowing them to mature before they began to form into a coherent narrative. This process revealed a “puzzle” of impressions — fragments of sound, memory, and landscape that gradually came together into the foundation of the project.

Music plays a central role in shaping the work. Becheru associates certain places with specific sounds, and his photographs seek to translate these resonances into visual form. Handful of Earth is both the first chapter of this artistic journey and the name of an album that merges traditional and contemporary music. Ambient, electroacoustic, and experimental genres serve as key sources of inspiration, informing the mood and rhythm of the images.
