Dries Theuwissen

Belgium

Biography

Dries Theuwissen, born in 1979, initially believed his future would unfold in the corporate world. He studied Modern History in Leuven (Belgium) and Granada (Spain), later completing a postgraduate degree in economics. Guided by curiosity, he worked across a variety of sectors before an unexpected turning point reshaped his path.

In 2014, a chronic illness brought his professional life to a sudden halt. In the years that followed, he experienced a period of uncertainty and reflection. During that time, photography became a source of direction and renewal, offering new goals, new places to explore and, ultimately, a new sense of purpose.

He continued his training at CVO Volt, where he developed his practice, and now works as a self-employed photographer producing documentary projects, portraits and event photography. He approaches the world with curiosity and hope, qualities that resonate throughout his images.

Six months ago, he debuted with two documentary series. *RehaBBattle* was presented in its entirety at the international photo festival Focus on Man, while *Faces of Tibet – 33 Years* was exhibited as a solo show in Louvain, Belgium.

Through his work, he explores how human dignity and agency are sustained under physical, cultural or historical pressure – a theme that feels especially relevant in today’s rapidly changing world. His images invite viewers to slow down, to look attentively and to recognise themselves in lives shaped by different circumstances yet bound by shared vulnerability.
