Ismail Abu Hatab

Gaza, Palestine

“This series is my way of resisting oblivion and silence.” Palestinian photographer Ismail Abu Hatab has photographed the shores of the Mediterranean in Gaza, where many people displaced by successive conflicts are trying to survive “between the sky and the sea.” Makeshift tents torn apart by the winds, polluted waters making fishing impossible, the threat of bombings… The daily lives of these men, women, and children are marked by fear. But despite the anxiety and deprivation, “life still goes on,” the reporter was keen to emphasize. Beyond the Sky and the Sea is Ismail Abu Hatab’s latest project. The photographer was killed at the Al-Baqa café in Gaza City by an Israeli airstrike on June 30, 2025. He was 33 years old. He was posthumously awarded the CCFD-Terre Solidaire Photography Prize.
