Kei Ito

United States - Japan

Biography

Kei Ito is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the concept of the invisible through photography. Inspired by the legacy of his late grandfather, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Ito uses his family’s history to create art that addresses global issues. His grandfather’s vivid description of the bombing, “like hundreds of suns lighting up the sky”, informs Ito’s practice of camera-less photography. He uses exposure to sunlight and breath as symbolic elements, linking creation with life itself. His work delves into hidden histories, addresses contemporary and future events, and honours those lost in historical and modern tragedies. Ito’s art has been exhibited internationally and is held in notable collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago and the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach.
