Maarten Rots

Netherlands

Biography

Visual artist whose practice explores the sublime details of everyday life and the perceptual ambiguity generated by the photographic image. After training in the audiovisual department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, he shifted his interest from video to photography, investigating the two-dimensional representation of space, depth, and visual perception. Experimentation with the camera is the central axis of his work, developed through projects and site-specific exhibitions in urban environments. Since 2016 he has maintained a nomadic practice that allows him to closely observe the smallest gestures of the urban landscape. From 2020 onward he has incorporated obsolete materials such as slide projectors and fragments of glass to create spatial situations. His work reflects on the human tendency to construct meaning from images and on the active role of the viewer in the interpretive process.
